Visual Play Between Warms and Cools

Mark Marcuson / 1 Comment

This painting has bothered me for a long time. Over a year ago, the background was a muted blue-grey. The painting had an overall cool, pristine feel to it. But I've rarely sold paintings that feel "cold." About six months later, I re-painted the background with warmer tones, and adjusted some of the foreground cools accordingly. It has looked unfinished ever since, and it also seemed to lose it's vibrancy.

Now finally, I've added the green wooden bowl to bring back the visual play between warms and cools, and the rough wood adds textrual contrast as well. Finally it feels balanced and like a better, more finished painting.

If you have any old paintings sitting around, I encourage you to get them out and problem solve. What have you got to lose? You might save a painting, but more importantly it will help you develop critical thinking skills and possibly add a few items to your "mental tool belt".

Have fun!
