Painting in the Rain by Mark Marcuson
Hello to you painters and non-painters!
Here's a plein-air (done outdoors) painting from our trip last week to the North Shore of Lake Superior. This is a beautiful spot, where the Brule River joins the lake.

I was attracted to this scene for many reasons, but on this particular morning it was overcast and mist was rising off the river. I set up my easel and got to work. The mist became a drizzle, and then rain. I've never painted in the rain before. Water began beading up all over the oil painting and my palette, pooling in drawers and painting cups. The painting seemed very grey and dull when finished - well duh!

Later in my studio, I added a bit of color, but the obvious element to play up was the contrast. And of course, because I'm me, I couldn't help but add a bit of detail though I know for some artists and buyers this "ruins" the pristine effect of out-of-doors paintings. My work as an illustrator continues to haunt my painting methods... :-)
Warm Regards, ~ Mark
